YUNUS ﷺ

The Story of Yunus ﷺ

Allah sent Yunus ﷺ to guide his people towards Him. He called them to believe in Allah and leave their wrongdoing, but they refused to listen. Yunus ﷺ became deeply upset with them and left his people before Allah had given him permission to do so.

Yunus ﷺ travelled by ship, but the ship was caught in a severe storm. The passengers decided that someone had to be thrown overboard, and Yunus ﷺ was chosen. He was cast into the sea, where Allah caused a great fish to swallow him.

Yunus ﷺ found himself in complete darkness — the darkness of the night, the darkness of the sea and the darkness inside the fish. In this difficult moment, he turned back to Allah and recognised his mistake. He called upon Allah, saying:

“There is no deity except You; exalted are You. Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers.” (Quran 21:87)

Yunus ﷺ did not lose hope, even though his situation seemed impossible. He repented sincerely and called upon Allah, trusting that Allah could hear him and rescue him. Allah answered his supplication and saved him from his distress.

Allah tells us:

“So We responded to him and saved him from the distress. And thus do We save the believers.” (Quran 21:88)

Allah caused the fish to release Yunus ﷺ and brought him safely to shore. He was weak and in need of care, so Allah caused a plant to grow over him and provided him with protection. Allah then restored his strength and gave him another opportunity to fulfil his mission.

The story of Yunus ﷺ teaches us that even when we make mistakes, the door of repentance remains open. We should never believe that we are too far from Allah's mercy. Yunus ﷺ turned back to Allah with humility and hope, and Allah answered him. His story reminds us that sincere repentance can bring us from darkness into relief and that no situation is beyond Allah's power.

Lessons from Yunus ﷺ

  • Turn back to Allah when you make a mistake. Yunus ﷺ recognised his mistake and sincerely repented to Allah.

  • Never lose hope in Allah's mercy. Even when Yunus ﷺ was surrounded by darkness, he continued to call upon Allah.

  • Admit your mistakes with humility. Yunus ﷺ acknowledged his wrongdoing instead of making excuses for it.

  • Keep making du'a in difficult times. Yunus ﷺ called upon Allah when he was in great distress, and Allah answered him.

  • Trust that Allah can bring relief. What seemed like an impossible situation was completely within Allah's power to change.

  • Repentance is a path back to Allah. When we sincerely turn back to Allah, we should have hope in His forgiveness and mercy.

Daily Application

When you make a mistake or find yourself in a difficult situation, remember Yunus ﷺ. Do not allow guilt, fear or hardship to make you give up hope in Allah. Instead, turn to Him, admit your mistakes, ask for forgiveness and make du'a with sincerity. Remember the words of Yunus ﷺ: “There is no deity except You; exalted are You. Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers.” Allah's mercy is greater than our mistakes, and no matter how difficult our situation may seem, we can always turn back to Him. Never lose hope in Allah.
