The Qur'an & Chemistry

The Origin of the Universe from Smoke

The early universe existed in a gaseous state.

Scientists believe the early universe consisted of hot gaseous matter before stars and galaxies formed. The Qur’an describes the heaven as “smoke” during its formation, which some see as a parallel to this early cosmic state.

“Then He turned to the heaven while it was smoke…”
(Qur’an 41:11)

The Big Bang

The heavens and the earth were once joined together.

According to modern cosmology, the universe began from a single unified state before expanding and separating into the cosmos we observe today. Many see a compelling parallel in the Qur’an’s description of the heavens and the earth being joined together before being split apart.

“Do the disbelievers not see that the heavens and the earth were joined together, then We split them apart, and We made from water every living thing?”
(Qur’an 21:30)

The Layered Heavens

The universe is structured in layers.

The Qur’an repeatedly describes the heavens as being created in layers. Some interpret this as a reference to the ordered and structured nature of the cosmos, a concept explored in modern cosmology and astrophysics.

“It is He who created seven heavens in layers. You do not see any inconsistency in the creation of the Most Merciful.” (Qur’an 67:3)

Expansion of the Universe

The universe is continuously expanding.

Modern cosmology discovered that the universe has been expanding since the Big Bang. This was a finding confirmed through astronomical observations in the 20th century. Remarkably, the Qur’an described the expansion of the heavens over 1400 years ago, long before telescopes and modern physics existed.

“And the heaven We constructed with strength, and indeed, We are expanding it.”
(Qur’an 51:47)
